Is CMC killing our English language?

Examples of textspeak CMC means computer mediated communication which is how we communicate using technology. An example of CMC are text messages. Some people might say that because of CMC we are killing the traditional English language as we make up new words. M.A.K Halliday would say that language changes according to the needs of its users. If there is a lexical gap, a word is invented to fill it. John Alego agrees with Halliday ,as he says we need new words for new inventions and technology, this made Alego create a classification of the new word formations such as: Loans, Shifts, Composites, Creations, Blends, Shortenings. In the 1990s the limit of characters in mobile phones to send messages was 160, which meant that the less characters you write the better, this created textspeak. As well as before everyone had to press the keypad buttons many times to spell out a word and there was no auto correct which meant that textspeak was so much easier and quicker.  Professor D

IS TEACHING CHILDREN STANDARD ENGLISH WITH AN RP ACCENT IMPORTANT?   Some people think that it is important that children speak Standard English with an RP accent, due to it being more understandable by others. However other think that it is not important at all. Although most people understand the Standard English with an RP accent, some might not think that is useful.  I personally think not everyone needs to talk in Standard English RP because different English accents were made for a reason. Some accents show how unusual and special some cities, villages, and towns are.  When children learn in school they learn how to pronounce words but also how to spell them. If Standard English with an RP accent would be taught to children, some might get confused while spelling words or pronouncing them due to teachers having certain accents ( which are different to the ones they are learning).  Teaching children Standard English with an RP accent might be useful for them in

Swearing makes you smarter ? Some people will think that only less intelligent people would use taboo language this is because those people probably lack vocabulary and replace it with swear words.However it is a scientific fact that people who swear are more intelligent than those who don't. People say that taboo language is one of the examples of poor discipline from the parents. However teenagers do not only pick up language from their parents or family but also their secondary socialisation such as peer groups, media, school, work place. Children can be taught from the young age to not to use any taboo language however that can change on the environment the child lives in or the types of friends the child has. Is America taking over Britain? American and British flag merged together to show Americanism   Some people might think that Americanism is annoying. This is because British people prefer traditional English language, however due to new American tv shows and shops people start using the American slang ,as others call it.   Most people find it annoying how now British people say ‘I could care less’ which is totally opposite to ‘I couldn’t care less’. If you say you could care less then you do actually care however if you say you couldn’t care less you don’t really care. Another phrase which British people use but others hate is ‘wait on' instead of ‘wait for'.
